Are superfoods a fad or fiction?

Lately there has been a lot of talk about superfoods. Is there any truth to these claims? Which foods are super?

Super foods are any number of foods thought to so full of nutrients that they are not only good for you but will also help to fight off diseases and the aging process as well. Is this just the latest fad or is there any truth to all this? Well, it’s definitely a hot topic for discussion right now so it is a fad. However, there is some truth to the superfood fad.

Which foods are superfoods?

The same foods doctors, dieticians, nutritionists, and probably your mother have been telling you to eat for years! Some of the foods on the super foods list include vegetables like broccoli and spinach. There are lots of different lists and websites with different super foods on them so how do you know which ones are really good for you? As with any diet the key to success is usually in moderation.

  • Broccoli & Spinach - full of vitamins A, C, and K
  • Salmon - high omega-3 fatty acid content, also a good source of protein
  • Sweet potatoes - contain large amounts of vitamin A, as do all of the vegetables in the bright orange family
  • Berries - filled with antioxidants
  • Eggs - inexpensive and easily accessible form of protein, and they contain 12 vitamins and minerals
  • Nuts - good source of essential fatty acids
  • Kiwis - excellent source of vitamin C, as well as vitamins A and E. K, also has a high fiber and potassium content
  • Tomatoes - filled with antioxidants
  • Tea - Black or green tea is good for you because of its high levels of antioxidants
  • Yogurt - Low fat or non-fat yogurt is considered super because it is an easy and low fat way to meet your daily dairy requirements

There are lots of super foods out there to choose from so look for the ones that are giving you the most nutrition. Try to eat your 5 portions of fruits and vegetables of different colors every day. This is an easy way to help ensure you are getting a wide variety of vitamins and minerals. Don’t get too caught up on eating only super foods just try eating foods that are good for you and you will end up super healthy!
