Why are people using CBD in their fitness routines?

CBD fitness

You may have heard about CBD (or cannabidiol) as it becomes increasingly popular across the globe. Many people have discussed how it has had an effect on their day-to-day life, and it’s gained traction in the fitness world too, with famous athletes publicly discussing the ways that they’ve used CBD.

In this article, we take a look at why fitness enthusiasts are using CBD products.

Muscle recovery

One of the reasons people give for using CBD products as part of an active lifestyle is that it is thought it could aid muscle recovery. The research in this area is still ongoing, but anecdotal evidence suggests that CBD could help those who are experiencing delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).

DOMS is common after intense or new workouts but it can make it more difficult to return quickly to exercise for those who do so regularly. It is thought that DOMS can cause inflammation in a larger area than just those muscles directly affected which means that it takes the body longer to recover.

Research has widely suggested that CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, meaning that it would likely be effective in reducing inflammation round the muscles after exercise.

Pain relief

Many athletes and those with active lifestyles will suffer from pain or injury over the years, including chronic pain. This can be anything from serious back pain to arthritis, but can cause major difficulties for those who want to keep up their exercise routines without the burden of pain.

Initial research has suggested that CBD could be used as an alternative to other methods of treating pain, or in addition to these. One 2008 review of current research on cannabinoids in the management of difficult-to-treat pain in the journal Therapeutics and Clinical Risk Management concluded that ‘the future for cannabinoid therapeutics appears very bright’. A more recent 2012 study in the Journal of Experimental Medicine found that the administration of CBD could suppress inflammatory and neuropathic pain without significantly causing major psychoactive side effects.

Stress relief

Another area often discussed in relation to CBD is in the management of stress. Although CBD is not psychoactive, it is thought that it helps to maintain and bring balance to the body. Some actually compare the sensation of taking CBD to the natural rush of endorphins you feel after exercise.

Therefore, CBD might be helpful for those who use fitness and exercise as a way to relax. Furthermore, for anyone participating in sporting competitions, it might help them to relax beforehand.
