Engines in your muscles

When I was in training for the Navy, I was very slim yet I ate huge meals. One explanation given to me for this was that if you are physically active, your muscles work like tiny engines burning up the fat all the time. Is this correct?

It is to a point. An extra

It is to a point. An extra 1/2kg of muscle will burn 50 calories a day just by being there as your body uses energy to maintain it. However, as for burning fat, your body will only do this if you have succesfully burned off the calories you have consumed through food and drink first.

Being aware of how much you consume is just as important as how active you are.
