Sugar Substitutes

A lot of people talk about how bad aspartame and saccharin are for you, and suggest stevia or agave nectar instead. How are the latter two options better than the first two, or better than sugar?

I'm surprised to hear stevia

I'm surprised to hear stevia has the same side effects as aspartame and saccharin. As for agave nectar, I agree that the side effects and addictive quality are reason for concern.

Wow those are some serious side effects! I must admit I have never even heard of these things and no I have I'm steering clear! Over the past few weeks I have simply reduced my intake of sugary stuff and feel better for it.

This has been an interesting one to look into. Stevia, I would group with apsartame and saccharin as having the same types of side affects commonly associated with artificial sweetners, long story short, they are all best avoided.

The interesting one is agave nectar due to its low affect on blood sugar, at first glance, it appears to be safe. The first issue however, is it is 1.3-1.4 times sweeter than sugar, which makes it more addictive. The second problem is that any reactions, even though they may be rare, appear to be serious alergic rections. Agave has also been used as a laxative and so reported stomach problems would stand to reason. Finally, and probably most seriously, is the reported risk of miscarriage due to its potential to stimulate blood flow to the uterus.

Sadly, we are still no closer to the perfect sweetner. Avoidance of all types is best, however, in the real world where thats not the case I'd recommend sugar in small doses.
